Life Group Questions- Spirit Breath
The word for “Spirit” throughout scripture is the same as the word for “Breath.”
Gen 2:7 Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.
Ezekiel 37:14 I will place my breath in you and you will live; I will give you rest in your own land. Then you will know that I am the Lord – I have spoken and I will act, declares the Lord.’”
John 20:21-23 So Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. Just as the Father has sent me, I also send you.” And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”
This idea of God giving new life by breathing on mankind or Jesus breathing on his disciples might feel removed from us and we might not know what to do with it. It almost feels impractical. But there is something strange and mysterious in it. There is something hopeful in the moment Jesus breathes on his discouraged disciples. He is reminding them of new creation… even when they feel lost.
This story resonates because we feel lost but in our very breath God has place the whisper to keep going and to look for hope and new creation. Let’s remember that together.
Think of a time when you felt pretty lost or hopeless. Share what was happening at the time and how you see that experience now.
What is something that feels particularly stressful or might be causing you to loose hope in this season? What is happening that you need God to breath on now?
Pray for each other in whatever way makes sense to your group. In your prayers ask for new creation in these areas of need.
